Ajna offers Indian dance assemblies that include a detailed and interactive presentation, performance by our teaching artists and a dance lesson where students learn a short Bollywood/Bhangra dance routine. Our highly successful format include concepts in geography, history and social studies in addition to dance and movement. India as a country is very diverse and we take the students on a cultural journey through dance. We describe, demonstrate and have the students join us in exploring classical (Bharatnatyam & Kathak), folk (Garba and Bhangra) and Bollywood dance styles that come from all over the Indian subcontinent. As Bhangra and Bollywood music is upbeat, positive and fun, it is very relatable for students of all ages and backgrounds.
We include cultural context and focus on sharing dance technique, rhythm, expressiveness and storytelling through dance which is an important component of Indian dance. We touch on concepts of identity and community and use our platform of cultural dance to celebrate diversity and promote inclusiveness.
Our assemblies are catered to the age and level of the students.
Each assembly includes: 1) Interactive description and demonstration of Dances from India including Classical, Folk, Bollywood and their cultural context. 2) Authentic & artistic Indian dance performances by Ajna 3) An interactive Bollywood and Bhangra dance lesson where students (and teachers!) learn a short routine
