Program Description

Our life science programs span all of biology: animals, plants, ecosystems, microorganisms, and more! Below are some of our most popular programs. For a full list, please head to wwww.smli.org/lifescience

-Animal Adaptations (all ages): Explore the incredible world of animals by getting up-close with the animals of SMLI. Learn about the fascinating adaptations they've developed to survive in their unique environments, and of course pet each one! Specialized programs available, including "Reptiles & Amphibians", "Mammal Mania".

-Butterflies (Pre-K - 4th): Discover the life cycle and anatomy of butterflies and learn how they use their unusual senses to find food. Take home your very own caterpillar and watch it change into a beautiful adult. Available April through June; added material fee.

-Dissections(3rd and up): Explore the anatomy of an organism at a depth only dissections can provide. Learn dissecting techniques, terms, and the special structures of each creature. Now offering grasshopper, frog, owl pellet, squid, and shark dissection programs. Added material fee.

-Insects and Spiders (Pre-K-2nd): See what distinguishes insects from spiders while observing live species and preserved specimens. Meet Susan, our tarantula,touch a hissing cockroach, make your own insect craft to take home!

Little Green Thumbs (Pre-K-2nd): Learn the different parts of a plant and their functions as you eat an example of each! We'll explore how a seed becomes a plant before students receive their own potted seed to take home and observe.

-Microscope Study (2nd & up): Learn the ins-and-outs of microscopy! Discover the colorful history of microscopy, learn the parts of a microscope and how slides are made, then observe and draw specimens from our vast selection of specimens.
