Journeys Into American Indian Territory brings Native American history and culture to life through an unforgettable, hands-on learning experience. Students are immersed in the traditions of the Plains peoples—past and present—through a full-sized tipi, a traveling museum of authentic artifacts (beadwork, quillwork, buffalo-stomach cooking pot, clothing, shields, hunting tools, and tipi furniture), and interactive activities. Storytelling, music, and dance take students on a journey from the buffalo hunt—learning how every part of the animal was used for food, clothing, and shelter—to the Plains peoples’ deep connection with nature and ecological balance. Immerses students not only in Native American cultures but from the NYS SS framework addresses grades 4 and 7 standards, yet is applicable to any grade interested in learning about Native Americans. Aligns with NYS Arts Anchor Standard 11 and specifically connects with Visual Arts Enduring Understanding and Essential Questions 2.3, 6.1 and 11.1. Each performance provides multiple workshops for one grade level.
