Program Description
 |
Cheryl Wills is an EMMY AWARD WINNING NEWS ANCHOR and talk show host with 30+ years experience working in NYC. Cheryl lives in Long Island (nassau county) and regularly visits schools both here in New York and nationwide.
This workshop gives students a unique opportunity to learn about the TV News business from a journalist who is a founding staff member of New York City's first cable news network: NEW YORK 1 NEWS!
Cheryl is enthusiastic and works very well with aspiring journalists! Students will learn fundamental techniques in the craft of contemporary journalism and cross-platform nonfiction video. Students will learn how to create their own news projects, rapidly building introductory skills in digital production and narrative storytelling.
Students will also learn that broadcast-style writing requires a different approach than the essays they write in class. It’s linear. TV Journalists write to be heard, instead of to be read. That means your viewer or listener has only one chance to hear what you’re telling them and comprehend it before you move on. There is no chance to go back and re-read. Therefore effective broadcast writing requires a level of simplicity and a conversational approach that takes practice to feel natural.
Cheryl also shares examples of her award-winning work. This interactive workshop is fast-paced and interactive!
Best of all - students run the newsroom! They conduct interviews, perform stand-ups and create assignments. At the end of the workshop, we review the students work on screen! watch this highlight reel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzm-FOO-3kM&list=PLLLRo3ALp5t4gniJVEiXstrnGDqO7_vki
