Program Description
Artifacts Alive! brings authentic artifacts from around the world into the classroom. The program engages student curiosity, inspires creative expression, and furthers the understanding of culture and community. Over the course of 6-8 school visits, students in third through fifth grades can immerse themselves in deep exploration of selected communities and cultural objects. They practice “reading” the artifacts, or visual “texts,” gathering data, posing questions, and developing evidence-based conclusions. Working with Museum educators, students then create their own artifacts and develop personal reflections and museum-style labels. This residency stimulates student participation in alternative, interdisciplinary, and multi-modal ways of learning while developing 21st Century skills.
