Program Description
Native American Vessel Making - Hand Building

In this program, grades K-12 students will have access to a live, interactive, webinar. The webinar is the virtual form of my in-person hands on program. I teach this in the same style that I would teach my college classes, so it is challenging, engaging and educational. I will be present during the whole program. Students will connect to a culture that is rich in symbols, patterns, and imagery.
The webinar will consist of multiple hands-on demonstration video segments, photo slide show, with voiceover, and live question and answer sessions. Guiding them through a step-by-step instruction on how vessels are made. They will design their own vessel employing 5 – 6 advanced techniques under my supervision. Following or during the webinar, the students will be constructing their own vase or bowl form that will be decorated with Native American designs, imagery, and patterns. Woven designs using slab/coil techniques and adding one’s own imaginative additions to the form can be used. They will paint and finish in their classrooms.
By the end of the webinar/ workshop they will all have a greater understanding on how to work with the clay and 3D. Art teachers will be responsible for bringing that knowledge for an onsite workshop experience into the classroom in the following weeks. I provide teachers with a downloadable checklist of arts activities that they can continue throughout the year.
What is it about?
As with many cultures, coil containers were used as storyboards to record our history. Demonstrations will include references to imagery of the Native American pottery and also relate the pottery/forms to the themes of nature and sustainability.
