This workshop introduces children to the world of sound and sound waves. Students enjoy demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
A BRIEF SYNOPSIS: A series of demonstrations will illustrate the properties and transmission of sound waves through various mediums. The majority of this class, however, is spent on changing the students’ voice waves using a digital voice machine similar to the ones used in movies. Using a sound machine, children are able to alter their voices to sound like Darth Vader or the Chipmunks. Although these are two of our most popular effects, there are over 150 different variations from which the children can choose. To make this class even more memorable, we record the children while they are talking or singing, and then present them with the tape of their altered voice to take home.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE: This class covers the concepts of sound, sound waves and its characteristics—a perfect introduction to the science of acoustics.
NOTE: Mad Science Programs are fun explorations into science and technology, and they encourage informal learning through hands-on experience. All Mad Science workshops include a lot of fascinating equipment, supplies, and take-home materials which the children build themselves. The Mad Science mission is to spark the imagination and curiosity of children everywhere by providing them with fun, entertaining, and educational activities which instill a clear understanding of what science really is, and how it affects the world around them.
