SUMMARY: This class introduces elementary physics to children through an exciting collection of six hands-on activities and an engaging discussion.
BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Students will find out what makes the world go "round" in an entertaining introduction to the concepts and basics of forces. Children will encounter and experiment using their own force of gravity. What happens to an object when a force acts upon it? Students will answer that question in “Bombs Away” with plasticene (clay) and rubber balls! With the class divided into four groups, students will visit four work stations to learn and experiment with gravity, precession, centrifugal force, and centripetal force. The gyroscope, a hot-wheels loop-to-loop, and our very own centrifuge will enable students to both further explore and apply the concepts they’ve learned.
EDUCATIONAL VALUE: Fun-damental Forces lays the foundation for further study in physical sciences and gives students a vivid and concise understanding of what makes the universe tick: gravity, inertia, centrifugal force, and centripetal force.
NOTE: Mad Science Programs are fun explorations into science and technology, and they encourage informal learning through hands-on experience. All Mad Science workshops include a lot of fascinating equipment, supplies, and take-home materials which the children build themselves. The Mad Science mission is to spark the imagination and curiosity of children everywhere by providing them with fun, entertaining, and educational activities which instill a clear understanding of what science really is, and how it affects the world around them.
