My program is geared to inspire students K-5. I discuss how and where I get my ideas, showing that I, like most students, keep a journal. Usually, my ideas start with a drawing. My drawings and writings work hand in hand to create a story. I share a current story idea with them and begin to show the process from idea seed to finished story. I show an animated diagram of a book map that describes the visual process of writing. I go into more detail about the writing process with the older students. With the younger grades, I keep it on a level that they will understand. I then narrate the finished story. One of the themes that I stress throughout is that a story, no matter how simple, requires a lot of revising until it becomes simply great.
My presentation includes technology. I draw digitally, going into more detail with the older grades. The drawing I create on the computer is projected onto the large screen. It’s simple but it contains so many of the concepts learned in curriculums: insect biology, the difference between a bug and beetle, primary and opposite colors, symmetry, horizontal and vertical placement. The school receives a digital copy that can then be emailed to the classes. I teach with just the right touch of humor and I happily answer questions from the students at the end.
